Basic Journal Article Citation - Print & Online Formats

Basic Scholarly Journal Article Format

Print and online articles follow the same formatting rules. This format should be followed for both:

Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year). Title of article: Subtitle words. Title of Periodical,

           volume(issue), pages. https://doi.org/xx.xxx/yyyyy

 

Example One Author:

Brownlie, D. (2007). Towards effective poster presentations: An annotated bibliography. European Journal of Marketing, 41(11/12), 1245–1283. https://doi.org/10.1108/03090560710821161

 

Example Two Authors:

Wooldridge, M. B., & Shapka, J. (2012). Playing with technology: Mother–toddler interaction scores lower during play with electronic toys. Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, 33(5), 211–218. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.appdev.2012.05.005

 

Article in a Scholarly Journal Without a DOI Number (Three Authors):

 

Overbay, A., Patterson, A. S., & Grable, L. (2009). On the outs: Learning styles, resistance to change,

      and teacher retention. Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education9(3), 356-370

Citation Examples for Magazines & Newspapers

Citing a magazine/newspaper basics:

If the magazine article has a DOI number, include it as you would with an online journal. If it's from the magazine's website, include the link in your browser where the DOI would be. DO NOT include library database permalinks:

 

Author Last Name, Author First Initial. (Year, Month, Day). Article Title. Magazine/Periodical title,

           volume(issue), page(s). DOI or Magazine website link if available.

 

Print Magazine Article with no DOI:

Lane, A., & Brody, R. (2019). No laughing matter. New Yorker, 95(41), 65-67.

Article on a magazine website with no DOI:
