The library develops and provides services to support faculty teaching and research needs.

Our Programs

The Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library offers On-campus, Extended Campus, Distance Learning and Embedded Librarian Instruction Programs to help prepare all of our students to be information literate in the 21st century. 

Information Literacy is more than the set of integrated abilities to identify what information is needed, understand how the information is organized, identify the best sources of information for a given need, locate those sources, evaluate the sources critically, and share that information. It is also the understanding of how information is produced and valued, using information to create new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning. The Instruction Programs provide course specific instruction, workshops, and online educational support to faculty and student at the university. Librarians collaborate with faculty to teach information literacy based the Association of College & Research Libraries' (ACRL) framework for information literacy for higher education. Librarians are available to work with faculty upon request through a variety of modalities on campus, online and at extended campus sites.

Student Outcomes:

Upon graduation, undergraduate students at Fitchburg State University will be able to:

  1. Understand that authority is constructed and contextual.
    • Choose the appropriate level of authority for the information needed.
    • Determine credibility of sources through various evaluative methods.
  2. Contribute to scholarly conversation ethically and responsibly at the appropriate level.
    • Integrate sources ethically and appropriately.
    • Explain how their scholarship contributes to onging discussion.
  3. Demonstrate that research is a flexible and iterative process of inquiry.
    • Formulate and refine a research question.
    • Organize information in meaningful ways.
    • Synthesize gathered information to communicate new ideas.
  4. Locate information using a variety of tools and methods.
    • Develop a search strategy appropriate to the tools and methods.
    • Locate sources relevant to the information need.
