Onboarding Program: Librarians

Goals

The agenda for your first year begins with a lot of pre-scheduled meetings and activities, especially during the first month, which will ease off as the year progresses and you become comfortable in your responsibilities, the library and the university. Here is an outline highlighting key time periods, activities, and goals to work towards during the:

First Day

  • You will have extended time scheduled to meet with the Library Dean and Library Program Area Chair to discuss expectations, ask questions, etc.
  • Time to settle into your office.
  • Meet with the Technology Department staff to pick up and configure your new laptop.
  • Receive an orientation with the Library Administrative Assistant regarding things like submitting your attendance, requesting supplies, checking your OneCard access to library spaces, etc.
  • The Library Program Area Chair will provide you with a first month agenda detailing all pre-arranged meetings and training sessions so you can add them to your calendar.

First Week

  • Attend follow up meeting with HR to finalize your HR benefits and closeout your HR onboarding.
  • Begin meeting with library staff and departments to meet personnel to get overviews of their work and how you might partner with each other. Initial meetings have been pre-scheduled by your Library Program Area Chair to connect you first with those areas you will be most involved with on a regular basis.
  • Begin job shadowing/training in preparation of your integration into some of your key responsibilities and shared duties. Initial training has been pre-scheduled by your Library Program Area Chair to connect you first with those areas you will be most involved with on a regular basis.
  • Invitations to standing meetings will be sent so you can get them on you calendar.
  • You will receive access and login information to the library and university systems related to your job.
  • Library Program Area Chair will review the library's Mentoring Program with you and introduce you to your mentor.
  • Daily check-ins with the Library Dean and/or Library Program Area Chair to make sure you have everything you need, answer any questions, and trouble shoot any issues.
  • Meet with MSCA Chapter President to learn about the Faculty/Librarian union and how it impacts you.

First Month

  • Meet with your mentor to develop a mentorship agenda and meeting schedule for the two of you.
  • Begin to navigate and familiarize yourself with the library. Review key documentation such as the strategic plan, annual report, etc. provided in this guide.

  • Periodic check-ins with the Library Dean and Library Program Area Chair.
  • Will have had initial meetings with all library staff and departments. 
  • Will have completed initial training in key areas and will in conjunction with the Library Dean and Library Program Area identify additional training needs.
  • Complete the required HR online training modules.
  • Begin integrating into some of your shared duties and taking on your assigned responsibilities. How soon and how much will depend on your incoming experience level and completion of any related on-the-job training.

First Three Months

  • Will be performing most, if not all, of your assigned responsibilities and shared duties.
  • Begin networking and outreach with university staff and department as well as other constituents/stakeholders you will be working with as a an FSU librarian and as it relates to your position.
  • Familiarize your self with the reappointment, tenure and promotion processes. Begin planning/developing/working on your continuing scholarship and professional activities, gathering materials for potential use in your review narratives and portfolio packets. 
  • Continue building your relationship with your formal mentor.

First Six Months

  • One-on-one meetings with the Library Dean every other week.
  • Continue periodic check-ins with the Library Dean and Library Program Area Chair.

First Year

  • After your first six months, the one-on-one meetings with the Library Dean will transition into a regularly scheduled monthly meeting.
  • Will have completed your First Year Reappointment process consisting of a direct observation conducted by your Library Program Area Chair and begin preparing for your Second Year Reappointment which includes submission of a narrative and packet of supporting documentation.
  • The onboarding program will be finished. You are a fully active and integral member of our team!
