ENGL 1100: Writing I (Caputi)

Why bother with books?

Why would you use a book over an article you can find online?

Books used for research are:

  • Generally nonfiction works providing information on a specific subject.
  • In-depth resources that provide much more information than a single article.
Print and eBooks are available at the library.

Finding Books in the Stacks

The Fitchburg State library uses the Library of Congress Classification System not the Dewey Decimal System to organize books on the shelves. This system organizes books by subject areas which are assigned letters to represent specific subjects. The call number is like a book's address and includes a combination of letters and numbers to help you locate the book in the stacks.

Call numbers begin with one or two letters and are organized alphabetically on the shelves. These letters describe the general subject of a book. (DS = History of Asia)

The second line is a number, which gives more detail on the specific subject matter of the item. This line is read numerically. (559.44 = Vietnamese Conflict)

The third line often represents the author's last name, and read as a decimal. (S = Smith)

The last line is the date of publication and is read chronologically. (1992)
