NURS 2700: Foundations of Nursing: Finding Articles-CINAHL

CINAHL Complete

CINAHL Plus with Full-text - Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. There are ways to limit your retrieved results - to just Nursing journals, to type of publication, to clinical queries. In the Limit your results section (below the green banner), look for JOURNAL SUBSET. Scroll down until you see Core Nursing or Nursing. Highlight the one you need - your retrieved results will be limited to just those journals and not medical or allied health journals.  Note the other limiting factors: PUBLICATION TYPE - among the choices are Research type articles. Under CLINICAL QUERIES you can limit articles to Therapy, Prognosis, Review, Qualitative or Causation - remember these are not keyword searching but refer to content of article.

Don't forget - checking the box for Full-text and/or Peer Reviewed is another powerful limiting results feature.

Depending on how you limit your search, results may show CE Modules and Evidence-Based practice along with Journal articles.

Quick Lessons are short 1-2 page articles with references.

CINAHL Plus with Full-text - CINAHL Headings

A very useful section at the top of the search screen (either Basic or Advanced screens) is the link to CINAHL HEADINGS. The search page allows you to look for terms by "Term Begins With," "Term contains," or "Relevancy Ranked." For instance, looking for 'nursing skills' using Relevancy Ranked retrieves a screen where you will see Nursing skills listed as part of a hierarchical scheme which will suggest ways to expand or narrow your search. Clicking on [Scope] gives a definition of the term and whether the term has been superceded by another. Clicking on the term will produce a list of synonyms and subheading details.

Check the box in front of the term you need. At the top of the screen look for 'Combine selections with' - the drop down menu choices are AND (selected terms must appear in same article), OR (you'll take either terms in article) or NOT (you do not want this term in retrieved results - be careful using NOT. Some relevant articles may be excluded. Click on Search Database.
